Michele Holt, DMA
June 21, 1952 – July 6, 2018
After a long courageous battle against cancer, Michele Holt passed away on July 6, 2018.
MMEA has lost a beloved friend and colleague, and an outstanding Executive Director.
If you are a student, colleague or friend of Dr. Michele Holt, you know how much she cared about you by the way she held you to high standards and walked beside you to be sure you reached them. To Michele, encouraging, nurturing, loving, and mentoring people was of the utmost importance – and she did that through music – especially through the teaching of music. Although her accolades are numerous, it is her enthusiasm, her determination and her passion that made her both larger than life, and so very dear, to so many.
Michele Holt served the music education profession many ways. She believed in the importance of volunteering in order to give back to those who had gone before, and to prepare the way for those yet to come. She served in leadership roles in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. She served as Eastern Division President for the American Choral Directors Association (1996-1998) and National ACDA President from 2005-2007. She served as Executive Director of Massachusetts Music Educators Association from 2009-2018 – completing her term just a week ago.
Michele’s dedication to the art of choral music, her nurturing and care for her students and colleagues, and her deep passion for the highest level of professional development for all music educators are hallmarks of her life. May those of us influenced by her dedication, her caring and her passion carry her memory on in all that we do for music education and beyond.
