JOB SUMMARY: With a commitment to centering inclusivity, diversity, equity, and belonging in executing key responsibilities, the Director, Early Childhood Education leads, engages accomplished and dedicated faculty to deliver a musical curriculum of the highest quality to children in the Pre-K through early elementary school grades in Boston and surrounding areas. A unique moment exists where New England Conservatory has the opportunity to invigorate the future of music, further access to early childhood musical education in and beyond Boston, and make an impact on humanity through grant-funded program development in a new three-year pilot project. In coordination with city and community leadership who recognize the need for programming around this age range, the Director, Early Childhood Education works with the Director of the Preparatory School, as well as external partners and stakeholders, to develop and implement an expanded early childhood program within the Preparatory Division. The Director, Early Childhood Education is a creative, dynamic, and experienced musician, educator, and administrator who oversees faculty, curriculum, recruitment, and fosters meaningful and inclusive lifelong musical engagement amongst young learners and their families. Working collaboratively with members of Preparatory staff, the Director, Early Childhood Education helps shape and lead artistic, academic, and educational outreach. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: In alignment with the Director of NEC Preparatory School, lead and manage all aspects of a grant-funded, early childhood pilot program including artistic, educational, and administrative functions, programming, policy, and operations—within the context of NEC’s strategic priorities and goals Recruit and oversee faculty for early childhood programming, which may be on site at NEC or at satellite locations in the greater Boston community Partner, alongside NEC colleagues, with early childhood leaders and learning centers in the Boston area for program creation and implementation Partner with faculty to create, develop, and implement a diverse range of age-appropriate programs and curriculum that engage a wide range of young learners Support students and their families to ensure the highest quality musical experience Collaborate with Office of Cultural Equity and Belonging to create a diverse and inclusive program and community In coordination with the ED for Expanded Ed and Director of Prep, partner with relevant colleagues and offices across the institution to drive enrollment, elevate brand, and expand awareness In coordination with the ED for Expanded Ed and Director of Prep, partner with Office of Advancement and Engagement around fundraising, as well as parent and alumni engagement QUALIFICATIONS Experienced professional musician, educator, and administrator, with relevant education commensurate with the expectations of the position Demonstrated ability to lead and teach an early education music education program with vision, excellence, and creativity Experience with Early Childhood methodology (e.g. Kodaly, Suzuki, Dalcroff, Orff, etc.) Strong track record in teaching and/or working administratively in Pre-K and/or elementary environment Demonstrated cultural competencies and commitment to advancing NEC's values of cultural equity and belonging Exceptional judgment, discretion, and integrity when working with students, faculty, and staff in an educational environment Experience with grant-funded programs, including program development and reporting, preferred Dynamic interpersonal skills, including nuanced interpersonal and management skills, capacity to steward institutional relationships, and ability to solve problems creatively Strength in working collaboratively and communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
