The mission of Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program (JQOP) is to ensure the long-term musical and social success of all students, and to positively impact them and their families through quality education and performance. JQOP is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan program that uses intensive, joyful, and ensemble-based music instruction to teach children social-emotional skills. In the 2018-19 school year, JQOP will serve 200 students in eight ensembles, including six string orchestras of various levels (beginner to advanced). Position Description: Support Teaching Artists (TAs) assist Orchestra Directors with set up, tuning instruments, helping students during rehearsals, and leading instrument sectionals, small-group lessons, and music theory classes. The six string orchestras include students in kindergarten through seventh grade, with various levels of experience ranging from beginner to six years in the program. TAs will be assigned to one or two ensembles, or support students from multiple ensembles through private and small-group lessons. TAs will work in collaboration with the Program Manager and Orchestra Directors to facilitate both ensemble learning and individual student progress. TAs will teach in alignment with JQOP’s curriculum and the El Sistema’s philosophy of musical excellence and social inclusion. All staff will ensure the highest quality learning experience for all students, support each child holistically, and be an active member of the Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program community.
·Team teach and support full-orchestra rehearsals of 30-40 students; lead sectionals, music theory classes, and private or small-group lessons as planned by the Program Manager and Orchestra Directors; work with students on repertoire, sight-reading, ear-training, and string technique
·Collaborate with administrative staff and fellow Teaching Artists to create a shared curriculum and pedagogy for the orchestra, as well as ensemble goals and evaluation tools for student progress
·Attend all staff meetings and professional development opportunities offered through the program
·Attend all concerts and community events/performances (gigs) for your ensemble
