Teaching Artist - Elementary School in Brighton
Handel and Haydn Society seeks a practicing, professional artist to educate, inspire, and engage students in weekly music classes. Students are in kindergarten through fifth grade at an elementary school in Brighton. Using the First Steps in Music and Conversational Solfège curriculum developed by John Feierabend and adapted to meet the needs of this school community, the Teaching Artist engages students in developing music literacy skills with a sound-before-sight approach. Students experience the joy of music through active participation in a singing-based curriculum emphasizing folk songs and exposure to live music performance by professional musicians. The Teaching Artist supports the social, emotional, academic, and artistic growth of students from an early age and works with the school staff to build a musically-rich learning environment. For 200 years the Handel and Haydn Society has enriched life and influenced culture by bringing vocal and instrumental music to America. Through its Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program, H+H offers transformative experiences that create a deep appreciation for music and encourage creativity and learning. Students from across Massachusetts sing in six ensembles in H+H’s Vocal Arts Program, high school choirs sing with the professional H+H Orchestra and members of the H+H Chorus in annual Collaborative Youth Concerts, and through School Partnerships, H+H is expanding and deepening access to in-school music education for Boston elementary school students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Deliver curriculum and instruction in music literacy and singing to students in weekly classes throughout the school year. The Teaching Artist teaches ten (10) 30-minute classes weekly during the school day. Scheduling is flexible based on availability of the artist and alignment with the school schedule. Instruction takes place with the classroom teacher present. Lessons should be based on the First Steps in Music and Conversational Solfège curriculum, align with the National Core Arts Standards and Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework, and draw on themes and topics relevant to the students. • Maintain weekly lesson plans and a weekly journal to record anecdotal data on program developments and student performance. • Prepare and lead students in performances for their families and school community twice a year. The model for these performances will be decided in collaboration with school administration. • Regularly communicate with classroom teachers to foster collaboration and connection with between music learning and other curriculum areas. • Attend school celebrations, special events, meetings and other functions deemed necessary by the school and Handel and Haydn Society administrations. • Be available to meet with Board members, donors, and funders during the year and participate in events that maintain and cultivate interest in the H+H Education Program. • Act as a representative of H+H at social events, educational meetings, and/or conferences. • Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • A passion for sharing music with all people, in particular with children. • Prior experience teaching in a youth educational setting, preferably in an urban environment at the elementary level. • Collegiate study in music and/or education and excellent musicianship skills. Vocal/choral artists are especially encouraged to apply. • Familiarity with First Steps in Music and Conversational Solfège is desirable, though candidates with strong qualifications in other areas will be considered and professional development offered by H+H. • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to and engage young children with genuine warmth and energy and to create positive workplace relationships. • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively with school communities. • Exceptional communication skills and attention to detail. • Pro-active approach, flexibility, reliability, ability to work independently, and a positive attitude are extremely important. • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students. • Authentic interest in advocacy for music education and the Handel and Haydn Society.
